How to Get Kicked (Nicely) Off a Piano at an Assisted Living Home

Or “How to Gain 20 House Points by Doing Absolutely Nothing”

Because nothing is exactly what we ended up doing on Saturday when we went to visit Elmcroft. Here’s what happened:

Sue, the activities director, gave me a list of people who would like some visitors. These were the people:

1) Wilma- Upon arriving at this woman’s room, we found she had a visitor. The visitor appeared to be leaving, however, so we thought we’d wait a bit. As the visitor was leaving, we heard her say, “Oh and don’t forget that Dr. P will be visiting you in a few minutes!” Apparently this woman didn’t need any visitors - she had plenty already.

2) Pearl- We found this lovely lady outside her room in the hall. We sat down to watch some TV with her, since that was what she wanted to do, and then she promptly fell asleep…

3) Andrea- Her relatives had come by earlier to take her out to lunch or something.

4) Ronnie- Veronica, or Ronnie as she’s called by some, was sound asleep.

5) Captain Bill- The Captain was enjoying his beauty sleep as well.

6) Nancy Lou- Nancy Lou was out in the lobby playing a game with some of her friends.

So, the ones who wanted talking to before either were sleeping, out, or had more important things to do, apparently. So then, determined not to make the trip a waste, my Auntie Kelly and I went and played piano. They clapped, but then one of the residents came up and politely asked us to stop playing, as they were about to play a game of trivia.

And that is how Elizabeth, my Auntie Kelly, and I did nothing except play a game of chess in their library…

Oh and by the way, 10 points each to Gryffindor and Hufflepuff for Elizabeth and I showing up at Elmcroft, which leaves us at:

Hufflepuff - 40

Gryffindor - 30

All Other Houses - 0

So hopefully our next volunteer attempt will go a little better. I can’t imagine it being any worse. Ooh.. did I just jinx it?

-SH

P.S. Autrey Mill Nature Preserve accepts volunteers of 16 or older without a chaperone present. Anyone 16 want to volunteer w/ me? Let me know! Thanks.

The Harry Potter Alliance: Let's talk about fair trade.

thehpalliance:

Benefits: Fair labor conditions, fair price, direct trade, community development, environmental sustainability, and lots more.

In our Not in Harry’s Name campaign, we want to make sure that our chocolate frogs don’t come as a result of child slavery, something that does happen and something…

So what is this “Owl Post” thing?

Well, it’s Centennial High School’s Harry Potter Alliance chapter.

What is the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA)? It’s a non-profit volunteer organization that promotes social betterment by drawing parallels between our world and Harry’s. Basically, we get to do community service with a Harry Potter twist.

Genocide, global warming, child slavery, poverty, and discrimination are just some of the things we fight. Just as Harry and his friends fought Voldemort, we fight against the injustices in our world.

An example of one of the HPA’s past campaigns is Accio! Books. This campaign involved collecting books and money to build new libraries around the world.

But as they say, “No work and all play makes Jack a dull boy.” So volunteer work isn’t all we do. We have fun with movie screenings, dances, and more.

So would you like to make a difference in the world and fight for what you think is right? Attend the interest meeting on Thursday, November 10th at 8:00am in I-38.

For more info, watch Andrew Slack’s video on the HPA (can be found below on this blog, or on youtube), email us at centennialhpa@gmail.com, or visit the HPA’s website at thehpalliance.org.
